Copywriting is a creative writing for marketing activities with the aim of increasing sales (conversion). It takes creativity in compiling copywriting so that the target audience can be interested in the products you offer.
For those of you who like to write, you often see in various job vacancies that offer copywriter positions, namely people whose job is to make interesting writings so that the goods/services are being seen. Finally, you are interested in entering the world of copywriting. However, when you do it, it's not like regular writing, is it?
Don't worry! 😁
According to Dean Rieck, there are 5 easy steps that make your copywriting powerful enough to attract the target audience with the POWER method (Prepare, Organize, Write, Edit, Review).
1. Prepare
If cooking requires preparing tools and materials, what is prepared when you want to compose copywriting is all the information about the product you want to market.
What is the information you need before compiling copywriting?
- Description of the product to be marketed,
- The purpose of the product is present to consumers,
- The advantages of the product,
- Prices that suit the pockets of the target audience,
- The benefits that can be obtained with this product,
- The advantages of the product when compared to various competitors's products,
- Special and unique things about your business, for example awards that have been won for decades, a hereditary business history that still survives today,
- Guarantees that the target audience can try, e.g. 7-day free trial,
- Prospects in terms of demographics (gender, age, education level, occupation, income, economic status), geographical (urban or rural), lifestyle, interests and behavior of the target audience,
- The objective of the product, such as the awareness, engagement, or conversion stages,
- Media used,
- Product offers at certain times, such as discounts, buy 1 get 1, gifts,
- Promotion deadlines that apply,
- Points that need and don't need to be included in the ad,
- Order & payment methods as long as the product is sold.
2. Organize
After compiling various information based on the points in the prepare stage, you can group these points in the organize stage. The goal is to sort out which important information can be arranged in copywriting form.
Here are the points that you can further develop in compiling copywriting:
- Product description
- The purpose of the product is present to the consumer
- Price offered
- Product benefits
- Product excellence
- Guarantees that consumers can get
- Prospects or target audience information based on demographics, geography, lifestyle, interests and consumer behavior
- The objective of the product being marketed
- Product offer
- Product offer deadlines
- Payment methods & product orders
3. Write
If the points at the organize stage have been completed, you can start compiling copywriting.
There are several important parts that you must write:
a. Headline
In this section, information such as product descriptions, advantages, benefits, prices, prospects, warranties, payment methods and orders can be developed to be more direct and attract the target audience. Because, the headline section will be read first by the audience. Thus, copywriters generally need around 50% - 80% to focus on this part.
Examples of headlines in copywriting that you often find are as follows:
"5 easy ways to stress-free life"
"Annual apartment rentals near me"
Apart from being direct, the headlines in your copywriting will be even more interesting if they contain elements of testimonials or product reviews from consumers or influencers about the benefits and advantages of your product.
b. Sub-headline
Enter the sub-headline stage by developing supporting information from the headline you have compiled.
Just like the headline, the information in the sub-headline section is direct which explains the product description, advantages, benefits, prices, prospects, guarantees, methods of payment and ordering.
From the headline above, here are the sub-headlines that you can copy:
"Start Family Premium Package now!
Get 1 month free subscription."
"Annual apartment rentals near me under $50k."
You can skip sub-headlines in copywriting if the information in the headline is clear, or the information you want to develop is more descriptive in the body copy.
c. Body Copy
The body copy section in compiling copywriting is descriptive, which means it explains more about the points in the headline or sub-headline section.
Here's an example of body copy in compiling copywriting:
"Start Family Premium Package now! Get 1-month free subscription. Safety guaranteed. "
Annual apartment rentals near me under $50k. Pay installments without credit card."
d. Call to Action (CTA)
You often see or hear many advertisment with these words:
“Download the app now!”
"Sign up now!"
“Try it free for 30 days!”
So, this is called a call to action (CTA). This information is intended so that the target audience immediately tries or buys your product.
4. Edit
If you done with your copywriting, don't be satisfied quickly! There is still an editing or editing process here. You see, good copywriting contains a message that connects with the target audience's point of view, so they become more familiar with, or motivated to buy your product.
In this process, try asking your business partners for their opinion using the target audience's point of view:
"Is the headline until the CTA good enough for them to read ?"
"Is the promo message or a product clear ?"
"Is the sub-headline connected with the headline?"
"Copywriting contains facts, or is it just excessive pleasantries?"
If your business partner can provide opinions for improvement, you can do the editing process by making several alternatives using words or other language styles that captivate the target audience.
5. Review
At this review stage, there are some tips for composing good copywriting and making the target audience have a big interest on your product:
- Try using the “5 seconds test” to test whether your copywriting immediately makes your audience interested. If it's hard for them to be interested, you can examine how copywriting is clearer and straight to the point.
- Stay away from negative things in your copywriting, because your audience always wants to see and hear the positive side of your product. Plus, copywriting affects the image of your product too.
- Make a variety of alternatives when compiling copywriting as much as possible. The more alternatives, the easier it will be for copywriting to be chosen that connects with your target audience.
- It's really mandatory to find lots of references so that your copywriting knowledge gets richer, both from competitor copywriting and other advertisements.
- Good copywriting uses a second person point of view that leads to the target audience.
To compose good copywriting, you can follow various tips and steps like before so that the target audience has a big crush on your product just through writing.
